Behind the Scenes: Acrylic Palm Frond Nail Art

by Beth Livesay | July 19, 2017

Fresh off earning the individual top scorer award at Nailympia Houston, veteran nail competitor Allie Baker stopped by NAILS Magazine for a cover shoot on her way to Greece. This globe-trotting tech has been doing nails for 20 years, spending 15 of those as the Global Brand Ambassador for EzFlow.

Since Baker’s last NAILS cover, she has welcomed her son to the world of nails. Jarrett Baker is not only a fellow nail competitor, but also helps by taking on his mom’s clients when she is traveling for work. When not educating on behalf of EzFlow, Baker (and son) can be found at her Medford, Ore.-based salon, Nail It! Summertime travel is not only a part of Baker’s job, but it’s also the theme of our August cover art. Baker used colors from EzFlow’s Island Hoppin’ summer collection to create vibrant destination nails.

Here are Baker’s steps for how to get this month’s cover look:

1. Sculpt the free edge of the nails using Lollies and Pop from EzFlow’s Candy Floss collection. Fade back toward the cuticle area using Rum Punch & Reggae and Montego Bay Breezes from the Island Hoppin’ collection. Accent one side with a small amount of By Invite Only from the Midnight Kiss collection.

2. Complete the cuticle area with a small amount of HD Acrylic Pink powder. Cap the entire nail with HD Acrylic Clear powder. File and buff to a high shine.

3. Create the flower by double dipping in HD Acrylic White and Lollies and Pop, and press them into petal shapes. Baker used Silver Screen from the Walk of Fame kit to accent the center of the flower.

4. The palm leaves were done using Forbidden Forest from the Enchantment collection and accented with Lily of the Valley from the Pastel Flowers kit.

Up Your Acrylic Skills: Mix Ratio

by Tracey Lee

Even though mix ratio is fundamental to learning about liquid-and-powder acrylic application, it’s still one of the biggest challenges for nail professionals in the salon. The performance and longevity of our product is hugely affected by an incorrect mix ratio.

What's The Difference? Clarifying Commonly Confused Nail Terms

by Holly Schippers

You probably know the essential differences between the products and nails terms you use in the salon every day — like soft gel versus hard or LED light versus UV. But could you provide a clear explanation to a curious client? And what about those fuzzy terms that can mean different things to different people? Here's a terminology "cheat sheet" we hope will help keep us all on the same page.
