By signing up at www.terracycle.com, salons can help keep disposable pedicure flip-flops out of local landfills and earn Old Navy coupons to share with customers. Instead of throwing them away, employees and customers simply drop the flip-flips in a designated box in the salon. When the box is full, an employee can download and print a prepaid UPS shipping label from the TerraCycle website and send the waste to TerraCycle. When the box is processed, a packet of $10-off Old Navy coupons will be mailed to the salon.
“The salon’s participation in the program can be part of a larger sustainability movement and becomes a marketable element of the business,” says Tom Szaky, CEO of TerraCycle, an international upcycling and recycling company. “Participants have access to flyers and signs that explain and inform customers about the initiative.” The used flip-flops will be recycled into innovative products such as playgrounds, park benches, and bike racks.
