2003 1ST PLACE: "The Diner" by Sue Tumblety, Matawan, N.J.

2008 FIRST PLACE: Congratulations to NAILS Mural Contest winner Patty Lopez of Parral, Mexico. Lopez spent five years living in Cancun, which was the inspiration for her “Topical Tropical” design. “If you travel just outside the city of Cancun, there are many little jungles, some of them with animals roaming free,” she says. One set of nails is flat art (it’s a re-creation of a mural she’d painted on her bathroom wall); the other is 3-D acrylic.

2008 3RD PLACE: Melissa Wills of Middletown, N.Y., used a combination of 3D acrylic and paint to create her “Haunted House.”

2008: Rena Rivera-Ryan, Jacksonville, Fla.

2008 Honorable Mention: L. Camille Mason, Toledo, Ohio

2008 Honorable Mention: Alena Stout, Greenwood, Ind.

2006 FIRST PLACE: Ingrid Bigenho of Zegerelli's Hair ExSalonce in Monroeville, Pa. Her beautiful "Angels' Playground" design is handpainted and encased in colored and clear acrylic, giving even the flat art a layered feel. The 3D angels are sculpted from acrylic and also handpainted. The entire design, which was inspired by the Sistine Chapel, took her nine hours to complete.

Spectacular. Amazing. Impressive. You can take your pick of adjectives, since all of them describe the quality and range of entries to NAILS' annual Nail Mural Contest. Beginning in 2003 with winners Sue Tumblety, Kazuko Tomiyama and Lorena Marquez, through 2009 when Kimberly Connolly Preston, Jessica Valasek, and Rachel Ouellette took the top prizes, these diminutive works of art continue to enchant us all.
