Just in time to coincide with the release of the next installment of the Twilight series, New Moon, CND has released photos from backstage at the fashion shows where the classic moon manicure has been refreshed. First made popular in the 1920s by a manicurist at MGM studios, the half-moon manicure, or crescent moon manicure (as CND is calling the trend) is back. It was seen on the Fall 2009 runways for Christian Dior, Ruffian, threeASFOUR, and Thakoon.

NAILS showcased a full moon manicure on our June cover with black-and-white tips, but the look for fall is more simple and elegant. Try just polishing the moon while leaving the rest of the nail bare. Or switch that around and leave the moon bare while you polish the rest of the nail. Dior models wore a deep purple nail with a cream-colored nail, and the result is striking. According to Elsa Deslande, the manicurist behind the Dior fall couture show, “It is a very complex aesthetic technique that is practically impossible to create on one’s own. That’s perfect for nail techs. Market these nails to your fashion-forward clients this fall when they’re looking for an elegant look for a night out on the town.
