Tanning Regulation Bill Dies Again

by NLS Staff | July 1, 1993

A West Virginia state assembly bill that would have mandated health and safety regulations and licenses for tanning salons did not make it out of committee in the 1993 legislative session, which ended in April, because of opposition to the bill. State Board of Cosmetology director Larry Abstein says this is the third year that a bill regulating tanning booths has died in committee, but he expects it to be re-introduced in the next session, which opens in January 1994.

Abstain also reports that a bill introduced by Senator Joe Manchin to exempt estheticians from licensing requirements also died in committee in the recent session. While West Virginia currently does not regulate estheticians, Abstein says the state board is considering introducing a bill in the next session that would mandate esthetician licensing.
