At Cure, A Nail Spa in Emeryville, Calif., oversized, comfortable wicker chairs with down pillows are used for pedicures, and the feet soak in lacquered bamboo bowls.

The cleaning and presentation of the pedicure and manicure areas at The Nail Lounge in Costa Mesa, Calif. (owned by Cassie Piasecki) are performed by preppers, who are paid minimum wage and given a portion of the tips for their work.

You don't need a lot of color to make a splash with your salon design. Try a more subdued palette, like the one shown here at Mizu Spa in San Francisco, to welcome clients to a calm sanctuary. Mizu (which means "water" in Japanese) features a shimmery, pale blue curtain to separate the space, pure white pedicure chairs, and an aisle of river rocks that adds interest. "All of the decisions are though of in terms of creating th refreshing, tranquil, and purifying atmosphere of water," says Stanley Saitowitz of Stanley Saitowitz/Natoma Architects. less can be more when it comes to design; you don't necessarily have to be loud to be unique.

At Roula's Nail Spa in Houston customers are greeted by a warm and relaxing pedicure area with a little something extra: there is a "disinfected" sign on each pedicure spa, reassuring clients that the chair has been cleaned since the last client.

Owner Kristin Luu of Fingers & Toes Nail Spa says that she wanted to create something fun with her salon. Behind the pedicure area is a mural featuring green ginkgo leaves and the leaf is in the salon's logo. Luu says she wanted something "organic looking" so kept with the green furniture and color scheme throughout. The salon was even used in a movie scene in the movie "Ocean's Twelve."

Brook Street Day Spa's (Wichita Falls, Texas) motto is "Your Private Retreat." They have created an environment with each room designed with its own personality. The pedicure room has a mural and Southwestern decor.

Egea is Evanston, Ill.'s (owners: Katherine Pappas and Carol Mavrakis) only wellness spa. They converted some massage rooms into pedicure rooms and have luscious black leather chairs that recline. Clients place their feet in silver vessel sinks.

At Dashing Diva in New York City, the Basic Diva Pedicure is $30. The salon chain features polish caskestands, Girls' Night Out, and has its own line of products. The Basic Diva starts with a lavender soak.

Charles Penzone, the Grand Salon in Columbus, ohio, features The Grand Pedicure for $55 and 55 minutes. The signature sevice is the creme de la creme of Penzone's pedicure offerings. In a quiet, custom-designed environment, technicians restore order to busy feet and then exfoliate legs and feet before trating the client to an energizing massage.

The Mojito Pedicure, at $65, is the salon's biggest hit and its most profitable pedicure service. Spa Roma Urban Dream Spa in Milwaukee also serves an ice-cold mojito while the client enjoys the service. For teetotalers, the salon recommends the Milk and Honey Pedicure.

The Mani Pedi Cutie nail salon in Hermosa Beach, Calif., encourages its clients to sit back and relax, even when they bring their children along. Embodying the term “kid friendly,” the salon offers a section for adults and a section for kids. There is also a private Hollywood Room in the back where the salon offers makeup classes for teens on Saturdays.

At R.O.I. Nail Spa in Raleigh, NC, Clients can sit back and relax in one of the nail spa’s pedicure thrones. If they’re in a hurry they can have certain parts of their pedicure service shortened. And if they have extra time, they can extend their service.

At Kinara Skincare Clinic in Los Angeles, owner Olga Lorencin and Christine Splichal have created a salon that is part boutique shop, part spa cuisine bistro, and skin care clinic. They feel the pedicure couches are more comfortable than pedi-spas.

Eight girls, 16 feet, and a whole lot of fun can be found daily in Seventeen Salon's "pedicure pit" in Plano, Texas.

Brooks & Butterfield Ltd. Day Spa owners Lenore and Patricia wanted blue throughout the spa to create a tranquil mood.They even had their pedicure chairs done in the soothing color.

Dr. Jodi Politz didn't feel confident referring her clients for pedicures, so she expanded her office at Mountain Podiatry to include a spa called futzpah118.
