Over many years of working in the beauty industry, I've seen it happen time and time again. Extremely talented and bright beauty professionals leave the industry because they are tired of sitting day in and day out at their nail stations. Unfortunately many of them are unaware of the amazing potential to grow professionally within this business. The opportunities to use your knowledge, experience, and creative abilities are enormous.

Maybe what you need to consider first is cutting back on salon and spa time and supplement your income in other ways. For instance, did you ever wonder who does the nails on magazine covers and advertisements? They are qualified nail professionals just like you and there are agencies that specifically cater to major consumer publications. Manufacturers like Star Nail International also use technical experts for application videos/DVDs, packaging and advertising photo shoots, and step-by-step demonstrations. Perhaps you've even developed your own technique using a particular manufacturer's product. If so, call them. You may be able to shed important light on a system that could help thousands of professionals. 

Devote your time to the business by education newcomers or those who simply want to expand their repertoire of skills. Most major manufacturers host regular classes at trade shows and distributor locations throughout the country. In fact with the increase of international business, exciting opportunities are opening up to educate all over the world. We are almost in constant need for new educators because so many of you choose to leave the business. Again, I urge you to stay and help shape the new nail technicians who desperately need you to guide them and act as a mentor.

Another important way to impact the industry is to actively lobby state governments to help protect your rights and abilities to practice your craft safely and profitably. You can either join organizations designed to do so or you can start your own. Too often we forget that together we have the power to make the difference.

And let's not forget about an area that is desperately seeking your help--distribution. You've probably noticed over the last couple of years how difficult it has become to get the essential products you need; it could be that they do not have someone on staff who knows enough about the nail industry.

Some of them hire outside professionals like you to consult on product and brand selection. Find out who you need to talk to at the distributor and notify them that you are there to help.

Some of the greatest ideas for new and improved products come from you, the nail professionals working with them every day. You may want to start your own company and brand. There are many private label companies and industry experts that can help. If all that seems too overwhelming, consider contacting a major manufacturer to have them produce the product and you could receive a cut from every item sold.

You can even help manufacturers by becoming part of the testing process in the research and development of new products. The list goes on and on. Sometimes we need to become inspired, find our own motivation, and re-ignite our passions. I invite you to look for yours.
