Ten Ways to Make Over a Service

LEARN A NEW TECHNIQUE FOR A BASIC SERVICE STEP. For example, use a different kind of massage during manicures or pedicures, apply a mask with a different kind of applicator (maybe a new brush), or offer a signature polish job (like a moon manicure polish, Cuban manicure polish, or American manicure polish).

CHANGE THE SIGNATURE SCENT. Scent is the sense most closely linked to memory — so changing the scent will help a service seem new again. If your clients prefer unscented products, stock up on an array of scented candles to light during different services.

ADD A SIMPLE ADD-ON, LIKE A PARAFFIN DIP, SCRUB, OR MASK. Look for something that is easy to incorporate that won’t take too much time. Increase the service price accordingly.

ADD UNIQUE INGREDIENTS TO YOUR SOAK, SCRUB, MASK, OR LOTION. Ingredients like cocoa powder, honey powder, milk, raw pumice, tea powder, wine, and oils add a special flair to any service.

RENAME A SERVICE. Sometimes all it takes is a name change to make an old service seem fresh. Look for name inspiration anywhere: magazines, other salons, candy, drinks, celebrities, or food.

SERVE A SNACK OR BEVERAGE THAT COMPLEMENTS THE THEME OF THE SERVICE. The quickest way to a client’s heart may be through her belly. If you are performing a chocolate pedicure, offer your client hot chocolate or chocolate cookies. If you are performing a champagne pedicure, offer her a glass of champagne.

REWRITE THE SERVICE DESCRIPTION. Describe the service in a way that makes it seem irresistible to clients, and play up its benefits. Basic manicures become the quickest way to beautiful nails, for example.

WORK FRESH INGREDIENTS INTO THE SERVICE. Cucumber slices, citrus, berries, flower petals, and fresh aloe bring a spa sensibility to even the most basic service.

ADD A FOCUS TO THE SERVICE. Good options include skin rejuvenation, cuticle care, nail strengthening, and callus reduction. Spend an extra couple of moments addressing the special issue.

PRETTY UP THE TOOLS. Don’t overlook the soaking dish, table towel, and implement presentation.
