Canada’s rain forests, in danger of being clear- cut, found advocates in hairstylists and nail technicians from three provinces who participated in the country’s first Haircuts Not Clearcuts event. Civello Salon-Spa, one of Canada’s most prestigious salons, hosted the event in which 39 other salons participated. Stylists and nail technicians contributed $2 per service, and clients were encouraged to match it. By day’s end the grand total reached more than $9,000. “We wanted a fun approach, not an antagonistic one,” says Stacey Robins, the event’s producer. The money is being donated to Greenpeace.

The winner of the drawing, Charlene Nascardellim, who is a salon client, won a weekend for two at Aveda’s Spa Retreat and Wellness Centre in Wisconsin.
