You might think Steven Hall would get his fill of people at his day job as the owner of Spectrum Nail Salon in Janesville, Wis. But several nights a week you’ll find him 20 miles away in beautiful Lake Geneva, working the evening shift as an innkeeper at the Lazy Cloud Bed & Breakfast. “The B&B has three acres of grass, gazebos, flower beds, fountains, and lawn games,” says Hall. “Guests can enjoy a sunset cruise on an elegant yacht or a breathtaking hot air balloon ride in Lake Geneva. There’s plenty to see and do.”

Above all, the Lazy Cloud is a place for romance. “Most of our guests are celebrating an anniversary, birthday, or honeymoon. We even have guests getting married here,” he says. The decor is rustic country and each suite has a whirlpool tub, gas fireplace, queen-size bed, couch, and a patio with its own outside entrance.

For Hall, it’s the people that make the job a pleasure, but that doesn’t mean he has a lot of free time to socialize. “I answer phones, take reservations, and handle guest services like furnishing picnics or delivering meals to the suites. I’ve delivered picnics and desserts in the rain, snow, and ice, but always somehow manage to get to their door safely,” he says. “I also give change, sell snacks and sodas, and help with morning breakfast. An innkeeper is in charge of the building as well, so you never know what tasks are going to crop up.

“I love speaking with each guest. We have a couple who has been visiting us three or four times a year for over 10 years. The man told me they’re spending their kids’ inheritance and enjoying life.”
