Anyone looking at social media lately may have noticed that the white free edge on French manicures seems to be thinner. Why such a minimal line? Melanie Visser of Bio Sculpture Gel explains: “A very large percentage of women have a short nail bed. If a French application is done on them, they end up with an unbalanced-looking nail length due to the white smile line being too high instead of near the nail’s free edge.” A thinner smile line can therefore elongate the look of the nail bed. Just because the smile line isn’t as deep, doesn’t mean there isn’t room to play. Sell clients on a slimmer French, telling them it’s more on-trend, then dress it up with bright colors, a matte finish, or an accent nail.
