As of July 1, 2000, the Georgia State Board of Cosmetology has new requirements for nail techs. With the passing of Senate Bill 95, the number of hours of required schooling has gone up from 320 to 525. In addition, there is now a 10-hour continuing education requirement for practitioners looking to renew their licenses, and a 15-hour requirement for license renewal for instructors. Previously, instructors were only required to take 10 hours of education. And with the passing of the bill, the term “manicurist” will be changed to “nail technician.”

"I believe the increase in the study hour requirement for licensure for nails will further enhance the integrity of our industry,” says board member Debar Adams-Harden. “The requirements for practitioners is essential due to the constant changes and advancement in technology and industry-related products.”

Rhonda Taylor, who has been in the industry for 17 years and was instrumental in the bill’s passing, says the name change from manicurist to nail technician reflects the fact that many in the industry want to be recognized and acknowledge for the nail services they provide. “I think the name change will add more professionalism and morale to this sector of cosmetology,” she says.
