As a sales and marketing executive for Protouch Beauty, a distributor of beauty products based in the Middle East, Tracey Findlay is happy to report that the nail business in the region is growing quickly despite a lack of training among local techs. Findlay, who is based in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, says that manicures and pedicures are very popular and have been for years.

“Most salons do both gels and acrylics, but gels are the favorite. Pink and white gels on the toes is the trend of the moment,” she says. While artificial nails continue to grow in popularity, they are not as popular with the local Arab women as with foreigners. “Before local Arabic women pray (which is up to six times a day), they have to remove their nail polish and makeup, so they tend to put nails on only for a special occasion like a wedding and have been removed the next day,” she explains.
