I just learned that this year marks the 20th anniversary of Look Good…Feel Better, a free, non-medical, national public service program dedicated to helping women with cancer cope with the appearance-related side effects of the illness and treatment. Created to help individuals with cancer look good and improve their self-esteem and confidence, LGFB offers cancer patients advice and assistance through group programs, self-help materials, websites, and brochures.
The organization is looking for experienced, licensed cosmetologists — as well as nail techs, estheticians, and make-up artists — to conduct group programs and/or one-on-one salon consultations. As a volunteer cosmetologist, you would be the voice of LGFB, teaching women the tips and techniques to improve their appearance and maintain a positive self-image. The commitment is just three to five hours a month — plus a four-hour LGFB certification class. The class teaches the basics of leading a LGFB group program, as well as understanding cancer and its physical and psychological impact. Volunteers also participate in an annual update class to refresh and expand their knowledge.
