OPI's Schaeffer Honored

by NAILS Magazine | May 11, 2010 | Bookmark +

“The beauty industry is a gift to us.” Those generous words came from OPI CEO George Schaeffer as he reflected on being given the ISBN (International Salon/Spa Business Network) Legend Award on May 3. Schaeffer was honored for his industry and philanthropic work by this association, which is devoted to improving the business skills of salon professionals and providing high-level networking. The highly quotable Schaeffer also reflected on the effect the recession has had on the beauty industry and said that it was a mind-over-matter game: “We decided a while ago to not participate in the recession,” he said, and commented on an image he saw early in his career that had a lasting impact on him.

“I saw the play ‘Brighton Beach Memoirs,’ which was set during the Depression, and there was a scene in the show where a woman was doing her nails and I was so struck by the fact that the country was in the midst of a depression, but it was important for this woman to do her nails.”

Schaeffer says he recently bought a hair color company and is looking forward to many more years in the industry. “Try to have some fun,” he told the crowd. “Otherwise, it’s just a waste of time.”
