Mixed Martial Arts And Toenail Polish

With the recent controversy over the J. Crew catalogue showing a boy’s toenails being painted pink, I thought it’d be interesting to note that one of the few places I’ve seen males wearing toenail polish is in the sport of mixed martial arts.

Chuck Liddell was probably the most prominent toenail polish wearer, not only wearing it for his fights but for other events like fundraisers and other fights he attends as spectator.

Another fighter, Justin Moore, who fights out of Lexington, Ky., says in an interview for TammyTV, that the majority of the fighters training at his gym, Four Seasons Martial Arts, wear black polish over their toes, saying, “I think a lot of it has to do with they have nasty toenails."

Frank “Twinkle Toes” Trigg, Chris Leben, and Jeff Monson have also been known to wear toenail and sometimes nail polish during their fights. And what’s interesting is it doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal. There aren’t a lot of articles out there with fighters having to explain their reasoning or motivations. It’s just kind of noticed, and then soon forgotten as the fight then begins.
