Where Does the Time Go?

by Maggie Franklin | December 30, 2011 | Bookmark +

Oh my! I only realized a little earlier this afternoon that today is actually Wednesday! I took Monday off (yes, I normally work on Mondays and take Wednesdays off) because I had a sneaking suspicion that the BF’s workplace would be closed — of course, they never know in advance if they are going to close when a holiday falls on a weekend — so I thought I’d plan in advance. Not to mention, this was definitely a Christmas that required a day off after the big occasion. And, since I took Monday off, I worked today — so my whole week is all kerfuffled up and I am off by at least one whole day in my brain.

Yet, here it is, after regular business hours on Wednesday afternoon/evening and I have yet to write a single post for my blog this week! Not to mention the two posts that we aim for each week! And, if things around the office at NAILS are still on schedule, my editor is usually off on Thursdays!

Good news, everybody! Maybe this week you’ll get two posts in one day! Maybe. Maybe not.

I don’t really care. I’m busy. Busy doing nails, busy flinching when the phone rings, looking at those numbers that haven’t been saved in my caller ID, feeling that wave of nausea pass through me, wrinkling up my face while I wrestle with myself about answering the call.

I know I need to answer the calls. I know that it’s the professional thing to do; that even though all I’m going to accomplish is interrupting my time with the client in front of me so that I can tell the person on the other end of the line who desperately wants a decent set of nails for their New Year’s Eve party that they should have thought of that about a month ago.

Ok. I don’t actually tell them that. I politely and sympathetically tell them that yes, I do work by appointment only, and no, I don’t have any openings left before the new year.

You know what I hate about that? That currently I have room in my clientele for about five new, full-time clients. "Full time?" Wow, wouldn’t "full time" clients be cool? I guess "regular" is the word we usually use, huh? And come about two weeks from now, I’m going to wish that the phone was still ringing as much as it is this week. But this week is full of one-hit-wonder business that wants in at the last moment for a set of nails they’ll never fill.

And I would love to accommodate them, I just don’t have the time.
