Client Health Scare

by NAILS Magazine | August 6, 2012 | Bookmark +

This week began normally: clients, pedicures and studying. However, all of that normalcy changed when my classmate’s client became sick.

Two young ladies came in to get their nails done. After getting her tips put on, one of the girls told my classmate that she had to use the restroom. On her way to the restroom we heard a loud noise. It was weird; it wasn’t like a boom or a crash but more like a thud. We were trying to figure out what that noise was when someone realized that the girl had collapsed on her way to the restroom. There was a brief moment of shock and then panic set in and people started scrambling to help. The esthetics teacher went to call 911. It appeared that she had hit her face pretty hard when she collapsed and when she regained consciousness she was extremely nauseated. The school is located in such an awkward location that everyone I know gets lost trying to find it. So instead of waiting for the ambulance, her father carried her out and drove her to emergency.

I just felt so bad that there wasn’t anything I could do. You know that feeling. You want to help, but you don’t know how. It’s horrible. I realized that beyond the basics (a Band-Aid and Neosporin), I don’t have any first aid training. Every time I have a client I always take such care in making sure that I protect her from overexposure, excessive filing, etc. I haven’t considered that a client could have a sudden health crisis while in my chair. If something were to happen I could call 911, but what would I do in the meantime?

That was definitely a learning experience for me. Has anyone taken any first aid classes before? Did working at a salon prompt you to take them? I’ve been looking for some local first aid classes to enroll into after graduation. It doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
