Would You Like to Buy an Insurance Rider with that Polish?

I’ve been noticing an interesting trend in my inbox these past few weeks. It seems that the pent-up longing from our recessionista lifestyles may finally be reaching the breaking point — for fall, it is all about rubies, diamonds, and gold, and that’s just in the nail polish.

Yes, it’s gilt to the hilt with nails this season. Would you believe that I received a press release for a $250,000 bottle of nail polish? (Sadly, no sample was included.) May I present to you:

Exhibit A: From fine jewelry brand Azature, known as the “black diamond king,” comes that $250,000 bottle of polish. It contains 267-karats of black diamonds. A touch out of your price range? Well, there’s a retail version that contains one real black diamond and retails for $25 at Fred Segal. It is even packaged in a diamond-shaped bottle.

Exhibit B: Speaking of ritzy bottles, don’t you love the packaging of this limited-edition OPI top coat? It’s to celebrate James Bond’s Golden Anniversary, and the top coat actually includes 18-karat gold leaf. Dubbed The Man with the Golden Gun, this luminous, rich top coat adds an additional layer of chic gold leaf texture whether painted over completely dry OPI nail lacquer or directly to the nail itself. The suggested retail price is $30.

Exhibit C: Zoya is getting in on the gold top coat action as well. It just announced a Gilty Pleasures velvet gift box, which features Zoya Gilty, an 18-karat Real Gold Flake Topcoat, plus two full-size colors to cover in gold, Zoya Raven (black) and Zoya Purity (white). The retail price is $30 for the box, and it's available for pre-order now.

Exhibit D: SpaRitual’s Gold collection is a special-edition nail lacquer infused with real 24-karat gold particles that give off an ethereal shimmer. The color names say it all: Gilded Age, Alchemy, Aurum, Electrum, Conduit, and Rusted Lux.

Exhibit E: And gel-polish isn’t left out, either. Red Carpet Manicure launched Your Fortune Awaits, with four karats of genuine ruby dust in each bottle. (This is from the same brand that decked out celebrities in $5,000 24-karat gold gel-polish at the Grammy Awards.) Though Your Fortune Awaits is exclusively for celebrities and their stylists, a retail version, dubbed Draped in Rubies, will be available for $9.99 in October.

Exhibit F: Real Gold Inc., a company that has been in the gold industry since 1929, is in step with real gold and silver nail products. These include Genuine 22-karat gold and pure silver glitter top coats, genuine 22-karat gold and pure silver glitter gel-polishes, 22-karat Gold Glitter Stripers and Pure Silver Glitter Stripers, and 22-Karat Gold Loose Glitter.

Will you be buying any of these gilded nail products for fall? (Or buying an insurance policy to go with them?)
