Eclectic — Like the Industry

by Maggie Franklin | February 19, 2013 | Bookmark +

It never fails to baffle me every time someone feels compelled to criticize me, my work, or something I’ve said by referring to, or comparing it to, my overall “portfolio.” Especially when that criticism includes accusations about my being “hateful” or “jealous” because I’m — apparently — not doing well in my business based entirely on the assumption that the photos of my work online represent some perceived insistence on my part to burden my clients with acrylic nails. Often flared, glittered, bedazzled acrylics.

My critics actually tell me that I’m upset because my business is “fading,” and they tell me that I’m not “evolving” with the industry, and sometimes I get feedback from people who actually think that I am not letting my clients dictate what I do on their nails.

Seriously? There are people out there reading my blog and looking at my nails on Facebook who actually think that all that glitter is something I’m forcing on my clients?

Sorry guys. I do what my clients ask me for. Even with the clients who say, “Do whatever you want, Maggie,” I still know what they like.

My “portfolio,” as it were, is made up of nails done by clients’ — paying clients — request. And it’s not all long, duck foot, glitter acrylic. But that is what’s popular in my area so that’s most of what I do. And yeah, I do enjoy doing it. It’s fun. I enjoy working with acrylic because I enjoy the sculpting. I like creating something that wasn’t there an hour ago.

But despite my personal affection for acrylic, and the growing perception that acrylic is what I’m all about — acrylics account for slightly less than half my services. Matched closely by gels — which tend to be overlays on natural nails, but every bit as blingy and bedazzled, just on short, rounded, natural nails.

And about 10% of my services are natural nail manicures. Mostly solid color, no nail art.

Clients often ask me what I like best. I like it all. There’s a different challenge in each product and technique.

Mostly, I enjoy that I have an eclectic clientele that allows me to do a little bit of everything.
