Blueprint of a First Year

Building Owner Put the Kibosh on My Curtains

by NAILS Magazine | August 26, 2013 | Bookmark +

Things have been running well, and I haven't had too many issues thus far. My appointment book has been full and booked at least a week in advance. So I've been happy with things...until a few days ago.

Since my work schedule has been so busy, I put off a few minor cosmetic things. The main thing was my windows and whether to put some kind of window treatments in them. I have two very large front windows -- both of them more than 90-in. wide by 78-in. tall. There are also two smaller windows on each side equaling up to about 65 inches in width.

After months of playing with ideas, I decided to leave the two front windows empty and put semi-sheer curtains on the sides. It helps the salon to not feel so exposed. The feedback was great on how the salon looked inside and out.

That is until the owner of the building saw them. Mind you, I technically don't rent from him. I rent from the florist that I share the building with. She liked the curtains -- as a matter of fact she helped me hang them! I was told after only three days of the curtains being up they had to be taken down because it "didn't look professional." I. Was. Furious.
One,, because he had someone else tell me that he wanted them down, and two, he gave me the idea to use curtains! I take extreme pride in my business and how it's perceived. I live in a pretty small town where word of mouth travels at lightning speed! Unprofessional is the farthest thing from what these curtains were.

I'm not mad anymore but am extremely disappointed. I a very clear vision of what I want the Purple Pinky Nail Salon to embody, and I just don't like to be told to change things especially via a third party.

Ok, now that I've released all that, I'm good. On to making some more hands and feet beautiful!
