Nails 101: A Student Blog

How Can They Not Teach About Sanitation?

by NAILS Magazine | December 3, 2013 | Bookmark +

Last week was very short for us at school, with Thanksgiving and all. We were working on waxing and models. All I have to say is it was very frustrating. My teacher was out the whole week, so they stuck us in the esthetician class. All the esthetics teacher did was tell us how to do it and watch a video. A student actually showed me and another classmate how to do it correctly.

Here in Colorado Springs, Colo., we are only supposed to wax from the knee down and the elbow down. My class decided they were going to wax whatever they could get away with. If the state board walked in the school would have been in trouble. It was hectic.

Let me tell you about sanitation. All I can say is “wow.” Everyone was double dipping their wax sticks and not throwing away the used strips. It was disgusting!

I am already a little disappointed in the way the school teaches, but you would think that the first day we would have gone over sanitation, rules, and regulations. Nope! None! No one knows how to properly clean and disinfect their implements. Students throw their implements into the Barbicide jars without washing them first. Then they let them sit for a couple of minutes and grab their tools out with their hands. No gloves, no tongs, just their bare hands! Since I have already been through all of the required classes in Arizona, I know how to clean and disinfect. So with the students who will actually listen to me, I explain and teach them how to clean their tools. It just frustrates me that I am doing the teacher’s job.

I have been trying to find continuing education and a mentor outside of school. But it seems like no one is an educator up here. I thought about calling a few companies and trying to find out if anyone would like to fly out here and have a class or set something up. I don’t want to lose my interest with school or my dream job. But I am to the point to where I just want to give up.
