Weeks 5 and 6: 3-D Nail Art and Other Surprises

I started Week 5 knowing that we were having a nail competition on Thursday, and even though I am still fairly green at doing nails, all new students were expected to participate.  My instructor told us that she wanted us to pick a theme and to have 3-D designs on the five nails that we’d be doing. She wants 3-D designs on each of the five nails? Huh? For who? Me? Those were the questions that were running through my mind as she was speaking. The entire class went on a field trip to several stores to buy whatever we needed to complete our project.

The theme I picked was “Under the Sea.” Picking a theme was the easiest part of this project for me.  While everyone was struggling to come up with a theme, I had that part out of the way early. After I took out the items in my bags, I just sat at my desk for a while. I looked around and everyone was diligently working on their nails. Drawing in art class was always a challenge for me in high school. So I chuckled at the thought of creating 3-D art on nails. I was so proud of myself for being able to make a seahorse that really looked like a seahorse. I quietly started singing the Dora the Explorer “We did it” song. I did it! I did it! I did it! Hooray! I did it! This was my first stab at nail art, but definitely not my last. With plenty of practice, I will eventually become comfortable with nail art. Everyone did such a great job.  I really enjoyed this competition and I look forward to the next one.

Week 6 was the busiest and hardest week I have had yet. Because of school being closed for Labor Day and then missing Tuesday for an out-of-state family business trip, I had to play catch up on Wednesday and Thursday.  I do not like missing class at all. Some people may think it is perfectly okay to take a day out of school.  Well, I didn’t do it when I was in college studying for my bachelor’s degree in chemistry and I do not wish to do it now. I had given my instructor advance notice about the day that I would miss, so she excused my absence.  I really appreciate her so much.

This week we were taught how to make sugar scrubs for hands and feet. After we were shown how to make one from our instructor’s recipe book of scrubs, we were all encouraged to use any of the ingredients on the table to make our own.  I made one that I call Pink Champagne Scrub.  It smells delicious and it leaves my hands feeling so smooth. We all had so much fun making scrubs.  I will continue making them to use on my future clients.

By the end of the week, I was all smiles. My instructor called all of the students around and announced that I was “Student of the Week” for the previous week.  I received a certificate and a gift bag full of all kinds of goodies for nails. I will continue going the extra mile and pursuing excellence in everything that I do.  Someone is always watching.  All’s well that ends well!
