I’m starting over on the thirty-day yoga challenge and would love to have you join me.

My salon owner/cousin is a great inspiration to me when it comes to being healthy. She is always making clever things to eat, going for miles of walks and jogs, or working out in addition to holding down a busy salon schedule. When she mentioned that the salon would be sponsoring a “diet bet,” I was all in. The holidays were brutal. You know how it is — extra stress can mean extra junk food, being busy means grabbing fast and easy instead of healthy, and drinking enough water is a challenge when you have to go to the bathroom constantly.

Today is day-five of the diet bet and I am feeling the effects of swearing off sugar. It is easy to believe that sugar is addicting when you go through such a miserable withdrawal process. I did cave on day-two and have some sugar, which made me kick myself for dragging out the withdrawal, then had to be more focused about staying on track.

The idea is that all of the participants chip in a dollar amount. Two-thirds of the amount goes into a pot that will be divided among the “winners,” the other third is to compensate the trainers for their personal time and daily attention. The challenges change each month and everyone who enters has a chance to win since it is goal based. This month’s challenge is to lose 4% of your body weight.

It was very intimidating to take a photo of the scale and of myself standing on the scale for the “before” information that got sent privately to the coaches. I don’t know about you, but sharing my weight with a non-nurse or doctor equals pretty serious commitment in my mind! I have worked my way back up to 100 ounces of water a day and the workouts are getting longer minute by minute. The whole concept of being a little healthier is a lot easier if you take it a little bit at a time. Monday my workout was a measly six minutes on a machine and five minutes of strength training. Highly unimpressive, yet you have to start somewhere in order to build up to what you want to be.

What are you doing to be just a little healthier this month?
