The Colorado Office of Barber and Cosmetology Licensure has cracked down on two schools for issuing fraudulent electric file certificates in violation of Rule 9 of the office’s rules and regulations. The office will not accept electric file certificates issued by United Beauty College or National Beauty & Massage Therapy College.

Rule 9 of the office’s rules and regulations states that licensed cosmetologists and nail technicians must obtain certification by the Association of Electric File Manufacturers (AEFM) or a substantially equivalent certification. If a licensed cosmetologist or nail tech has not received an AEFM certification or substantially equivalent certification, then she cannot use an electric file.

The information has been forwarded to the Division of Private Occupational Schools for further review.

The office is recommending that nail techs or cosmetologists who have taken electric file courses from either school return the certificate and request a refund, as well as obtain certification through the AEFM.
