Challenge 9 asked our contestants to take inspiration from INM’s animated series featuring Jimmy the Swan. Contestants had to create a single fantasy nail art tip complete with at least one movable component. The animated portion of the nail had to be INM-related somehow. Any mediums could be used except embellishments. A video and sketch were also mandatory for completing the challenge.

This week’s guest judge was former NTNA season two competitor and current INM educator, Marisol Alvarado. Permanent judges include CND’s Jan Arnold, NAILS NTNA season 2 winner Lavette Cephus, NAILS editor Erika Kotite, NAILS senior editor Beth Livesay, and the rest of the team at NAILS Magazine.

Week 9: Animated Short

This week’s challenge is not for fans of flat nail art. INM’s mascot, Jimmy the Swan, was brought to life in a series of YouTube videos. We asked our Top 4 contestants to get animated by creating a fantasy nail tip complete with a movable component inspired by INM. Players were allowed to use any materials to bring their art to life, with the exception of pre-made embellishments. Contestants also had to show us how their animated feature began — in sketch form. The sketch plus their inspiration had to be shown in a video that we then uploaded to NAILSTV. We’ve posted all the entries on the Week 9 challenge page.

Week 8: Rocky Horror Halloween

It’s that time of year; and not just Halloween. This year brings a very special anniversary: the 40th anniversary of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” The movie is a cult classic that has fascinated several generations of musical/comedy/horror buffs. Now it’s time for Rocky Horror nails.

Sponsor Gelish launched a special licensed Two of a Kind set in honor of the anniversary; their challenge for contestants was to create a Rocky Horror-inspired manicure that can be worn out for Halloween.

The final set must use polish and gel-polish somewhere, and contain a glow-in-the-dark component. Colors red, black, and white also had to be included in the final design. We asked contestants to create a video showing how their idea came to life.

We’ve posted all of the entries on the Week 8 Challenge page.

Week 7: The Next Picasso

ntna-week7-collage

This year the great modern artist Pablo Picasso would have been 134 years old. To celebrate his birthday and sponsor China Glaze’s new nail art collection, we asked our contestants to paint a Picasso-inspired masterpiece on a single hand. They were allowed to paint whatever they wanted, so long as it was done in Picasso’s style. This is a hand painting challenge, so acrylic paints and polish ONLY were allowed.

Artwork could be done on tips, so long as they were applied on an actual hand for the final submitted photos. To get a better idea of how the contestants unleashed their inner Picasso, we had them create a 3-5 minute video depicting how they painted their design and the inspiration behind the subject matter. We’ve posted all of the entries on the Week 7 Challenge page.
