For season three’s first Last Chance Design Lab challenge sponsored by CND, Szilvia Egerszegi and Tan Nguyen will battle it out one-on-one to see who has a chance of staying in the competition. CND’s Jan Arnold will select her favorite look Friday and you’ll find out who will remain for at least one more week.
All Last Chance challenges are done on a single nail tip. Contestants are also asked to describe their looks. There are no other elements to this battle.
Since Tan packed his paintbrushes after the Pink and White Couture challenge, this week’s Last Chance challenge is loosely related.
Jan Arnold Style: Jan Arnold is a huge fan of couture. Translate one of her fashionable ensembles onto a nail tip using any media you see fit.
Here are the looks they created:
Szilvia Egerszegi
I started this assignment doing some research. As Jan always has stunning outfits at various events it was very hard to choose the absolute favorite one. I launched a J.A. Couture Salon and displayed this incredible black dress and gold jacket in a shop window. I chose a dress from The Blonds, I think it is unique and perfectly suits Jan. And as a huge purple and flower fan, I chose the floral purple dress that Jan’s wearing at Nail’d it! I just wanted to add a little from my style as well. The black skirt was made using acrylic. I used the same technique to create the jacket, working with slightly thicker sheets and cut out the front sides. The sleeve of the jacket is hollow on the inside. The flowers were painted using acrylic paints and the knife pattern was made with watercolor paints and contoured with gel-polish. The window frame is made with kitchen foil and molded with acrylic, then covered with gel-polish and acrylic powder to get a rough surface. I then ainted with acrylic paints and pigment powder. The lips are made of acrylic, painted with cracking nail polish, and gold acrylic paint. For the sign I used a pendant base and antiqued with black and gold acrylic paints.
Tan Nguyen
For this challenge I chose to do one of Jan’s outfits for this year’s NYFW. I decided to create my own designs as if I was working for the NYFW show. I wanted to do a monochromatic nail of just gold. I want to be able to design a piece for the runway. Also I wanted it to be a wearable design like a piece of jewelry. I first created a base using two tones of gold acrylics and shimmers, then added some metallic hexagons on top. I used gold wires to create an effect of metal textures. Keeping the integrity of the gold and to stay monochromatic I then created a mount for my gold beads. I used a metal wire and clear acrylic to mount the base. I then added the gold beads and secured the embellishment. Using gold wires I made a spiral ribbon on the underside or the bead. To finalize my look, I added Swarovski stones to the sidewalls and arches for my jewelry-piece nail.
Congratulations to Tan Nguyen for winning the first Last Chance Design Lab challenge! Tan went up against Szilvia Egerszegi to create a piece of Jan Arnold-style couture on a single nail tip. CND’s Jan Arnold chose the winner.
Jan said, “They both did a great job and approached it from totally different perspectives! Tan designed a more abstract interpretation of The Blonds jacket, recently gifted to me before the S/S 2016 show. The detail and adornment is beautifully and intricately designed. Very chic! I love Tan’s nail and would wear it, for sure.”
This means Tan will move on to compete against the next eliminated contestant. Find out on Friday who that will be.
