I use a French drill bit to rebalance my pink-and-whites. Is there a certain technique for drilling it out — for instance is there a certain angle? Do I do short nail beds and long nail beds the same way?
Normally, when filing with an electric file, you hold the bit parallel to the nail to prevent damage from the top edge of the bit.
However, with the French fill bit, you hold the e-file at about a 45-degree angle.
You drop the handle, raising the bit off the nail at an angle, and use the edge to cut the shape of the smile line while removing product at the appropriate angle. The technique is the same for short nail beds as it is for long. It is also the same for different style smile lines. Just be extra cautious when working over the nail bed not to file down into the natural nail. I highly recommend taking a hands-on class with an expert who teaches with that bit. —Elaine Watson is global director of education for Star Nail International.
