How can I get the same results from a file versus a sanding band when prepping the nail?
I do not like using a sanding band on the natural nail, and many clients are afraid of them. I have a sanitizable “prepper” bit made specifically for the natural nail bed that works great. I, too, have better results using this prepper bit on the nail before product application. Using a regular file can also cause damage to the nail plate if used too harshly or if the client is sensitive. Make sure that you use a pterygium remover and/or a good cuticle pusher first to remove all the dead or stuck cuticle from the nail plate. Then go gently around the cuticle and nail bed with your electric file. Dust the nail plate and the cuticle area very well, use your dehydrator, and prime if you use a product that requires it. I find that dehydrating twice is also helpful. — Darlene Feric, honorable mention in NAILS' 2003 AVAs in the Technician of the Year category
