California nail technicians recently receive a letter from a group of professional nail polish manufacturers describing what toluene, a solvent use in nail polish, is and what health effects it can have if user is overexposed.
More than 30,000 California salons have received warning signs for employees on toluene exposure under a directive from the state attorney general’s office.
Scientific studies have shown that workers can safely work around toluene if it is below certain exposure levels.
In a partial victory for professional polish manufacturers, the California State Attorney General’s office ruled in late February that professional polish manufacturers are not required by California’s Proposition 65 to warn retail consumers and salon customers that nail polish contains toluene.
The challenge was a lawsuit brought by the consumer action group As You Sow against companies that use the solvent toluene in their nail polish.
