I subscribe to a free e-newsletter from the National Association of Eco-Friendly Salons & Spas (NAEFSS) called “One Green Thing.” The president of the organization, Tamara Jercha, began a recent newsletter by explaining the three “E”s of sustainability:
> The first “E” is the economics/profit side of sustainability.
> The second “E” has to do with the environment/planet side of sustainability.
> The third “E” is the equity/people side of sustainability.
The third E, she says, involves giving back, either to an individual, your community, a national cause, or all three. She offered some ideas on how you can practice the third “E” of sustainability to help unemployed individuals in your community.
> Offer a free class for styling and make-up application appropriate for a successful job interview.
> During the class draw names for free services such as haircuts and manicures.
> Get the community involved; hold a “cut-a-thon” and offer to match money earned to provide free haircuts for unemployed job seekers.
> Ask your vendors for support in the form of free trial-size products.
> Partner with local businesses to create a “Get Hired” event. Maybe the human resources manager at a local bank can offer free interviewing advice; a local clothing store can offer advice on dressing and accessorizing for successful interviews; and of course your salon or spa can offer grooming and make-up tips.
