Nontoxique and non-profit partner Spa4ThePink have completed the first of many planned manicurist oncology trainings. The specialized trainings give licensed manicurists a glimpse into the effects of cancer treatments and how they change the way services are administered in the spa to safely and appropriately accommodate clients with cancer.
Oncology training provides important tools for spa professionals providing treatments that support a full mind/body/spirit approach to relaxation and healing or are simply about feeling good on this new journey. Patients or survivors can confidently receive hand and foot care that is appropriate for them with licensees who know how to navigate the needs of those who have had lymph nodes removed, especially those who suffer from lymphedema or peripheral neuropathy.

“Just as importantly, manicurists learn to transition from the fun ‘listening’ ear role to a supportive caregiver role and learn new listening skills,” says Julie Bach, founder of Spa4ThePink. According to manicurist and Nontoxique CEO Sheila Fredriksen, “This training is groundbreaking for manicurists, considering this niche is typically not thought of as having any significant role in the spa or salon.”
The relationship between the two organizations is a natural fit, with Spa4ThePink set on educating licensed spa professionals how to care for clients with cancer, and Nontoxique providing cancer-safe skin care after Fredriksen personally experienced the side effects of certain skin care ingredients.
Training is done over two days. The first part is conducted by Sally Tenioro, an oncology nurse, and the remaining by Spa4ThePink and Nontoxique. Upon completion of the course, attendees are encouraged to participate in spa days at facilities such as the Anshcutz Outpatient Pavillion to put their skills to work. Attendees are also provided both retail and fundraising opportunities that help announce their specialized offering to their community while raising funds to support continuing trade education and free spa days.
