One question that’s often asked is, “How do you become a successful nail technician?” While this seems like a simple question it is actually very complex and multifaceted. I would like to take the time to address it over a series of blogs, in addition to including reader input and suggestions.
Step one is education. Learn everything you can and recognize that you should continue to learn throughout your career. Take classes from reputable people, read books, take notes for reference, take a class again after a year or two as you will have a new perspective once your experience level changes.
Make sure you understand the products you choose to work with and that you are well versed in the anatomy you will be using them with. Then practice the basics. Everything has a foundation; the natural nail is the foundation for all of your nail coatings. Learn about the natural nail and become its champion and protector. Then learn about the coatings and how to properly apply them so that they do not cause any damage to the nail.
Understand that you should be able to apply polish, gel polish, gel, liquid-and-powder, any manner of nail product or coating, to the nails properly then let the client wear it while you maintain it, then have you remove it properly with the nails having suffered no collateral damage. Make it your goal to achieve this level of education.
Some resources to get you started towards education would be:

Please leave your suggestions and feedback in the comments for other topics on what makes a successful nail professional as I will be looking for them to add to the series! Feel free to include resources as well.
