Watch along every week with NAILS' Next Top Nail Artist 2014 winner Lavette Cephus as she reviews the wacky world of "Boss Nails" on Oxygen.
The nail industry has made its way back into the world of reality television! This time around we get introduced to 26 year-old Dana Cody, owner of Tippietoe Nail Salon in Miami, Florida. This full service salon and budding empire is one of the hottest places in Florida right now to get quality, on-trend nails.
After watching this show, I see that they have as many potential reality stars as they have nail techs at this salon, as Tippie Toe is operating with a crew of 20 staff members and techs, all with unique and um, eccentric personalities. This "cast of crazies" came about because Dana's mother (the original owner of Tippie Toes before she passed) taught her to take misunderstood people and make them part of her team. Dana will have to learn what it takes to be a leader for her crew and tame the over-the-top personalities in order to take her salon to uncharted heights. It will be interesting to watch Dana transform from "coworker” to boss.
The Introduction of Nuni Torres:
You may be watching the show because you're a nail fanatic, you want to catch some reality drama, or you could be watching because you are one of the 285,000 people who follow Nuni Torres on social media. Nuni Torres' work is known across Instagram for his precision, trademark hybrid nails, and almost perfect application. What Nuni also brings with him to Boss Nails is his undeniable charisma, better-than-you attitude, and a larger-than-life ego, which is a perfect recipe for reality TV gold! I think that Dana's decision to bring Nuni into the mix was a great strategy to build her Tippie Toe empire. I can't wait to see what will come from this cast in this upcoming season.
Moving on...
What reality TV salon would be complete without … HAPPY HOUR?!? Like, seriously? Is this even legal? Who would try to create a professional salon environment while also implementing a Happy Hour for their staff to take advantage of? Especially for a group of adults who already seem to be not following the basic salon rules! I understand wanting to make your salon fun, but this is too much. The techs seem to like Happy Hour more than the clients do. Drunk techs and clients don't seem like the ideal situation for a craft that requires so much precision.
Now for the star of the show... The nails!

Treasure nails by Dana Cody at Tippie Toes Salon.
Treasure nails made Tippie Toe Salon famous. As a salon owner I know that keeping up with trends is a MUST to stay relevant in this industry. But one rule I live by is NEVER sacrifice technique for trendy when it comes to creating a set of quality nails. But those treasure nails that nail tech, YAYA did were hideous! The structure of the nail was too thin and wide, and it made the client’s fingers appear bigger than what they really were. But the client seemed happy, which is always a plus.
One set of nails that I was really impressed with were the ones that Nuni created. Now, that nail application was flawless, using great technique and structure, and very chic. We'll see if the rest of the staff will rise to this level of quality. (If they don't vote him off the island for his attitude first.)
Final thoughts on Boss Nails... I'll let you know, but what I will say is I hope to see as much technique as twerking in upcoming episodes this season.
Stay Beautèful,
Lavette
