It’s officially November, and that means a month of raising awareness for men’s health issues. Volunteers begin November clean shaven, then for the rest of Movember grow, trim, and wax mustaches in order to change the face of men’s health.
These men, known as Mo Bros, not only raise awareness, they raise funds by seeking sponsorship for their ‘staches. Funds raised in the US go to support prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. The Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG Foundation work together to ensure Movember funds are directed to a broad range of programs in the areas of awareness, education, survivorship, and research.
Currently, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in U.S. men. The American Cancer Society’s statistics show that one in six men will develop prostate cancer this year.
Those in the nail industry can help. Consider wearing mustache nail art and offering it to clients to benefit Movember. Some examples of Movember support include Brenda Williams of the Eveline Charles Salon and Spas in Kelowna, B.C., Canada, who decided to offer Movember nails. All October she offered pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness, but notes that the mustache seems to be much more popular. Artistry of the Nail at Salon Shibumi in Portland, Oregon is offering free hand painted mustaches with any paid nail service.
Mo parties are also common throughout the month. You can host your own with mustache themed favors. We’d love to see what you come up with to help out the men in your lives. Email pictures to beth.livesay@bobit.com or post pictures and hash tag #nailsmovember to share.
Happy Movember!
