Using fiberglass or silk for a nail repair has been around longer than I have been doing nails, and even since before I was born! It still remains a useful material and can be merged into our modern-day services easily. Here is one way to integrate it into your gel-polish service if you only offer natural nail services in the salon yet find yourself needing to save a split or cracked nail.
1. Prepare the nail as you normally would for a gel-polish service.
2. Size the silk or fiberglass to the nail. Here I am using Backscratchers precut self-adhesive fiberglass.
3. Apply the strip to the nail.
4. Cut off the excess fiberglass or silk at the free edge of the nail.
5. Apply a thin layer of base coat to just the fiberglass by pressing it into the fiberglass. Do not brush it on. Cure.
6. Brush on a thin layer of base coat over the entire nail and cure.
7. Remove the top film with alcohol and lightly shape and buff with a 240 grit to remove any excess strings, bumps or imperfections in the surface, clean with alcohol, and proceed with your service, starting with a thin layer of base coat as if this were a naked natural nail.
