Lessons Learned Through Taekwondo

Part of my effort to be a little healthier has led me to taking Taekwondo with my son.

Taking Taekwondo with my son has been an amazing experience in so many different ways.

We haven’t talked about the effort to be just a little bit healthier lately. Funny how easy it is to get distracted from that, isn’t it! What efforts are you making towards it this year? I am doing a better job of tracking my water. My doctor suggested the app MyFitnessPal, which helps with keeping track of water, calories, and exercise. If you would like some moral support, just “friend” me in the app. You’ll find me as fingernailfixer.

My biggest effort this year was joining Taekwondo in January with my son. The idea was to have something for just the two of us to do together. It has been an amazing experience in so many different and unexpected ways. The challenge of working really hard to learn and do something I am not comfortable with or good at is an extremely humbling experience. It also gives my 11-year-old the chance to be the best at something and advance ahead of me, while encouraging me to keep trying when I fail. In addition it puts me in the role of student, keeping it fresh in my mind how challenging it is to learn and grow, and the importance of a patient and passionate instructor — which of course carries over into my own classes.

I was in L.A. during the belt testing so I’m sitting at a white belt until next time. The test makes me nervous; however, just like learning anything with nails, the chance at success will be determined by the willingness to practice and keep trying!

For those of you that like a little data with your info, here is some really interesting information from salon owner Michele Baker in Georgia. Being one of the first states to open left the salon owners to scramble to learn a lot of things on their own and many have been generous in sharing things they have figured out to help make operating in the COVID-19 world more systematic and understandable.
