Hello! My name is Jessica Sandoval. I am 37 years old, a wife and mother of two handsome boys. I have run my own business but have never felt that passion, that “this is it” feeing. I have spent many nights wondering “What do I really want to do when I grow up?” Whenever I needed time to feel relaxed and regroup, I had my nails done.
I have had a love for nails since I was very young. I remember sitting in my mom’s office, putting paperclips on my nails with tape over them and painting them red. I finally got my first full set when I was 15 years old. I felt so cool.

I wrote out my first business plan at 17 and then a few more times on how my spa was going to be. I never allowed my creative and business sense to work together until now. I am scheduled to start school at Bellus Academy in San Diego, Calif., on October 1! I am excited and terrified — excited that I will finally be exactly where I have always wanted to be and terrified that I'm coming into this world too late. Am I going to be able to hustle and make a good living? Will I be looked at as the old lady? Can I achieve those awesome nail art looks?
I have always been a big believer in women empowering one another. I hope using this outlet will inspire other women to reach for their goals and dreams, and at the same time give you an honest look at what it’s like going back to school this late in the game in the beauty industry.
I also look forward to using my new skills to donate my time to help women who are rebuilding their lives — to help them receive a beauty boost!
As of this writing this instalment of my nail student blog may be the last one for a while. Similar to many schools and other institutions around the world, due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic classes at San Diego City College have been suspended until further notice.
During week five, we received another lecture on skin structure, growth, and nutrition and tests on pedicures and nail tips and wraps. A good portion of the week was focused on giving manicures.
NAILS has a new student blogger! San Diego-based Gregory Fletcher is looking forward to getting into the nail industry after retiring from his first career in the financial services industry
Let’s continue to shine, continue to spread light, joy and love to all around us! We’ll make a difference one smile, one hug, one nail service at a time!
It’s been such a long journey, from being excited and feeling unstoppable to being tired and exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore. Now, every day that passes and I get closer to my graduation date I get more and more energy.
