Hello, my name is Saniyyah Patrick, and I’m from Philadelphia, Pa. Before I decided to enroll in the nail tech program at Queen Beauty Academy, I was a stay-at-home mom and also a full-time student pursuing a degree in applied science with a concentration in surgical technology. I know that’s drastically different from nail technology, but it surely isn’t a surprising change of pace for myself or those around me, as I have been doing nails on my own for over a decade.
Doing nails allows my creativity to flow in the form of nail art design and creation. I truly enjoy every aspect of working with nails — everything from nail health to applying sparkly, glittery gel-polish. When I am creating designs, it’s allows me to express my natural talent and artsy personality. I’ve always been in love with the arts, and nails have always come naturally for me. When I was younger I would practice on my girlfriends for hours on end, doing all the latest trends and designs and trying to perfect my craft. Later on, I became obsessed with Minx, glitter, and free-hand art. Now I can attend nail school during my other school break to pursue my passion. What made me finally decide to actually enroll was the push and major encouragement from my closest friends and family members. The words that enticed me the most were, “You have too much talent to sit around and not use it.”
So, with research and a deep breath, I made the decision to enroll. The program consists of 300 hours, and I will be there 40 hours per week or more, every day except Friday. I look forward to learning and gaining new techniques to be an outstanding nail tech and provide my clients with superior work. My future plans are to open up my own small spa and provide services that include nail and skin care. I also plan to offer free services to anyone who is affected with mental health issues. I believe that this is my time to begin pursuing and living my dreams, and I’m ready for all the endless possibilities in being a nail technician!

As of this writing this instalment of my nail student blog may be the last one for a while. Similar to many schools and other institutions around the world, due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic classes at San Diego City College have been suspended until further notice.
I was fortunate enough to attend the three-day International Salon & Spa Expo (ISSE) held in Long Beach, Calif., January 26-28.
The first semester of nail school is now in the rear view mirror! I am now officially 50% done with my education to become a licensed nail technician.
We had two tests this week: 1) UV and LED Gels and 2) The Creative Touch.
This week we had a test on electric filing. We also received a lecture on UV and LED gels during the week (overlays and extensions).

During week seven we began performing nail services on clients.
During week six, we learned about nail product chemistry and the basics of electricity.
During week five, we received another lecture on skin structure, growth, and nutrition and tests on pedicures and nail tips and wraps. A good portion of the week was focused on giving manicures.
During week four, we had lectures on pedicures and on skin structure, growth, and nutrition.
This week we received lectures on chemistry and liquid and powder enhancements (acrylic) and had our first hands-on lab with reallive people.
This week we had our first written tests (multiple choice) and our first practical (nail tips).
I survived my first week of nail school! Well, I assumed that I would. But you never know!

It’s been such a long journey, from being excited and feeling unstoppable to being tired and exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore. Now, every day that passes and I get closer to my graduation date I get more and more energy.
It was a really exciting week for me, and I'm starting to see the finish line as I continue to progres.
