I’m a pretty avid reader of Rolling Stone Magazine, and as I was catching up on an issue from November I was surprised to see a picture of nail art.

It came from an article by journalist Guy Lawson about the ever-worsening drug cartel violence in Mexico, specifically the city of Culiacán in the west coast state of Sinaloa. The article says that Culiacán has become so associated with the drug traffickers, or “narcos” as they’re called, that it is often reflected in the culture there — and they pictured this nail art as an example.

The picture is of Jesús Malverde, a Robin Hood-type outlaw from the 1900s who has become a sort of patron saint for the “narcos” and a folk hero in the Sinaloa area.

I guess it goes to show, you never know where nail art will pop up.
