What is one of the things I will add to my services offered: MINX! In case you don’t know what Minx is, it is a heat-applied nail design that is all the rage in the nail world (Beyoncé, Lady GaGa, Rihanna, Katy Perry can all be seen wearing the designs). Visit www.minxnails.com for more info. The Minx service can be a nail tech’s money maker. And I plan to make it one of mine.

While the application of Minx appears easy in theory, it takes practice to actually achieve a flawless application. So how did I initially practice? I gathered a few friends together and called it a Minx party. I Minxed three people in one night! After I completed the service, I then collected payment. Since I was just starting out, I charged them half of what I plan to charge when I REALLY start to do Minx nails. This allowed me to restock my Minx inventory and pay myself for services done.
As a nail tech student, we are sometimes eager to get out into the nail world and work. My advice to you, my fellow nail tech students, is to charge a nominal fee while you are “practicing” on friends and family. This will allow you to learn sound financial practices (how to pay yourself and have money to refill product). I keep a ledger on my client cards as to what services were performed and what I charged the clients.
What will you offer as a nail tech that will be a “hot” service that will make you money? Will you specialize in nail enhancements or nail art? I would love to hear what your plans are!
As of this writing this instalment of my nail student blog may be the last one for a while. Similar to many schools and other institutions around the world, due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic classes at San Diego City College have been suspended until further notice.
During week five, we received another lecture on skin structure, growth, and nutrition and tests on pedicures and nail tips and wraps. A good portion of the week was focused on giving manicures.
NAILS has a new student blogger! San Diego-based Gregory Fletcher is looking forward to getting into the nail industry after retiring from his first career in the financial services industry
Let’s continue to shine, continue to spread light, joy and love to all around us! We’ll make a difference one smile, one hug, one nail service at a time!
It’s been such a long journey, from being excited and feeling unstoppable to being tired and exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore. Now, every day that passes and I get closer to my graduation date I get more and more energy.
