We so often fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others, finding shortcomings because we can. With some things this makes sense — structure is pretty specific and scientific; it needs to have certain components in certain places for optimum strength and performance. What you need to remember though is that with art, beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

Your clients are your beholders and if they love your art, stop beating yourself up about not being as good as “so and so.” It’s great to take classes and learn new techniques while working towards improving yourself. Problems arise, though, when fear of not being good enough stops you from trying at all.

Seeing this painting the other day I thought to myself, that’s really not to my liking, I can’t say that I care for it at all. Clearly someone else thinks it is a work of art or it wouldn’t be hanging in a public place. One of my favorite artists is Jackson Pollock and I have an acquaintance who thinks his work is too messy and doesn’t look like art.  Notice that these are all opinions, not facts! You ARE an artist, you have a unique style and something to offer.
