Can you imagine a time when some people in America weren't allowed to paint their fingernails? I ran across this touching story on NPR's Storycorps last week and haven't been able to get it out of my head ever since. You can listen to a podcast of  Mary Ellen Noone telling her great-grandmother's story about what happened when she, as a black woman in 1910 Alabama, painted her nails with red polish. It's heartbreaking to say the least.
