“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” –Rumi

Do you still love doing nails? Does it show? In what ways does it show? I see a lot of complaining on social media. Complaints about clients, complaints about classes and companies, complaints about coworkers, amongst other things. The complaints might be legit. If a coworker is stealing that is bad news. If a client is habitually 15 minutes late, that is grounds for a serious discussion and possible change of venue. Ask yourself, though, if these things belong on social media.

If you’re feeling a little smug because you would never speak of such things online, how about in the salon with clients present? Unless your breakroom is soundproof that isn’t a safe room for complaints either! Think about how annoyed you are when two store employees or restaurant employees are complaining about their jobs, boss, or customers while you are either waiting for them to actually do their job or just happen to be within earshot. It’s hard not to give them a tip on professionalism instead of cash. The same thing applies in the salon.

If you’re happy and you know it, let it show. Don’t let the petty things disturb you while you are working; save them for the end of the day and salon meetings where they belong. If you do not have salon meetings, see if you can start them. Salon meetings not an option? Try a physical release of stress like kickboxing, aerobics, or something similar where you can be aggressive and take out your frustration without letting it bleed into your homelife or your nail table.

Being professional and choosing to be happy and enjoy your passion takes work. If it was easy, everyone would do it!

Reopening? Know Your Numbers

For those of you that like a little data with your info, here is some really interesting information from salon owner Michele Baker in Georgia. Being one of the first states to open left the salon owners to scramble to learn a lot of things on their own and many have been generous in sharing things they have figured out to help make operating in the COVID-19 world more systematic and understandable.
