My 3-D flower on a hard gel sculpted nail
This week was a short week due to the holidays, but I was determined to make every moment count! We came back from our extended weekend on Wednesday (which is now our only day in a classroom setting — the other days are on the salon floor) and aced our first test of the new module. I'm so proud of my class. Everyone has something going on outside of school but we still manage to focus on our future. It's been three months now and yes, we have had moments when we wanted to give up, but all eight of us are still here and doing great at what we do!
After the test, our instructor did a demo on 3-D art. She showed us how to do different flower petal techniques and how to add more definition, as well as different ways to make a 3-D bow. We've worked on 3-D art before, but now it's time to put these advanced techniques to the test. Moving on to hard gels, I attempted my first set and I'm not too proud. Hard gels are definitely not the easiest thing to do, in my opinion, as it takes a lot of patience, but if you know me, you know that I'm determined to be great! I've decided that I won't perform this service until I have mastered it on the other hand.

My coworker and I before we started her gel mani.
On Thursday, my third scheduled client arrived! One of my coworkers came in for a pedicure and a gel mani. I haven't seen her in a while because she just had a baby, so I was so excited to not only see her but to make her feel good! Being a mother, I understand that we need our "me" time to unwind and relax our mind. So I started with her pedicure (she enjoyed that foot rub), and finished with a French manicure-style gel manicure.

Now that we're on the floor taking clients, there are waves of emotions and thoughts. I'm nervous but it also takes me back to the feeling of "I can't believe I'm actually doing this!" I never knew how much I would love nails or how good I would be, but I'm blessed to be able to enjoy this beautiful journey. Don't let life bring you down, guys. There are going to be hard times, times that you just don't know what tomorrow holds, but you have to be faithful and know that tomorrow is in God's hands and His love will get us through. We're here for a reason, my friends, so continue to stay positive and optimistic and SpreadJoLove!
As of this writing this instalment of my nail student blog may be the last one for a while. Similar to many schools and other institutions around the world, due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic classes at San Diego City College have been suspended until further notice.
During week five, we received another lecture on skin structure, growth, and nutrition and tests on pedicures and nail tips and wraps. A good portion of the week was focused on giving manicures.

Let’s continue to shine, continue to spread light, joy and love to all around us! We’ll make a difference one smile, one hug, one nail service at a time!
It’s been such a long journey, from being excited and feeling unstoppable to being tired and exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore. Now, every day that passes and I get closer to my graduation date I get more and more energy.
