This week we started a new unit, my final one. Monday's Chapter was about nail wraps and nail tip application. We learned the proper steps for applying a nail tip and performing nail wrap services. My instructor demonstrated with silk and fiberglass wraps, and then we practiced.
The only thing that I don't like about nail wraps is the fiberglass. After you apply wrap resin, you have to apply the accelerator and repeat the steps, but if it's not fully dry it will make your resin brush get stuck and hard, which makes it almost impossible to work with. When that happens, you have to clean the resin brush with acetone and that takes more time out of performing the service. A good trick to avoid that is having a back-up resin so that while your first brush is soaking in acetone, you can still perform the service. You don't have to worry about that with the silk wrap because you don't apply accelerator, you let it dry on its own. On Tuesday one of my classmates asked me to repair three of her nails so I did it with nail wraps.

We have three new students now, and Thursday we finally got to my favorite chapter besides nail art: monomer liquid and polymer powder nail enhancements. My teacher demonstrated how a pink and white nail is done. We practiced doing the pink and white on a form and one on a nail tip (a translucent pink nail with a tip and silk wrap, and fiberglass wrap on a tip). Next week, we're going to continue with the monomer and polymer chapter. Also, I am officially a senior! It happened so fast that I'm still in shock. I got my results back from my practical exams and I got 100% on both! I hope that when I take my State Board I can pass it like I do in school. Next week we are making our own scrubs, and I think it’s going to be so fun! Thank you so much for reading my blog every week; I am so grateful. I hope everybody had a wonderful week. I'll see you back in week 13!
As of this writing this instalment of my nail student blog may be the last one for a while. Similar to many schools and other institutions around the world, due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic classes at San Diego City College have been suspended until further notice.
During week five, we received another lecture on skin structure, growth, and nutrition and tests on pedicures and nail tips and wraps. A good portion of the week was focused on giving manicures.
NAILS has a new student blogger! San Diego-based Gregory Fletcher is looking forward to getting into the nail industry after retiring from his first career in the financial services industry
Let’s continue to shine, continue to spread light, joy and love to all around us! We’ll make a difference one smile, one hug, one nail service at a time!
It’s been such a long journey, from being excited and feeling unstoppable to being tired and exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore. Now, every day that passes and I get closer to my graduation date I get more and more energy.
