Another week complete! Sometimes it feels like the week goes by so slow, but then I look up and realize I completed another week! I had a moment this week where I questioned whether I could really continue to do this or not, and a lot of it had to do with my daughter. By no means is it easy to give up this much of my time for the next seven months, but I’m not going to give up that easy either. Just when it seemed as though it was going to be too hard I shared my blog with everyone. The response has been so great and supportive that it gave me just what I needed to provide further confirmation of my decision to do this.
This week I learned about the express pedicure and the basic pedicure. I have to admit, I am not a fan of feet. This is one of the areas of the profession that I wasn’t sure that I would be able to accomplish. However, now that I have gone through it I realize it is not as bad as I thought it would be. I might be all right! I’m so excited to be learning more and more. Between the help of my peers and my instructor I feel as though I am gaining the confidence I need. I also practiced more on the things that I learned in the first three weeks, and I completed my first hot oil manicure.

On Saturday, we were extremely busy. I arrived for class and had to jump right in on helping the more advanced students get set up for the day. It was Valentine’s Day weekend, so it was all hands on deck. I learned how to set up the pedicure room, which was pretty cool. Now when my time comes to service clients in that area I will know exactly what to do. I think I need to work on my speed in set up but I know that will come with time. I wanted everything to be perfectly folded and aligned the same way. Those who know me would understand that I may not be able to change that habit!
I do have to admit that there were some moments that made me pause in Week 4. One thing that is so important to me is my time. I do not think that I can say it enough. There were a couple of days where I felt as though I lost valuable learning time due to some administrative things that had to be addressed. Nothing is ever perfect, but I found myself getting lost in what I saw as distractions. I can never get that time back, but I know that it helped some of my peers so I don’t want to complain. I do believe that it is important for administration and students to communicate, so I am hoping that others were satisfied with the time taken to sort things out. This was probably one of the bad times for me thus far because it happened two evenings. Whether it’s this school or another, there are going to be challenges. However, I am hoping to be used as an outlet to bridge the gap between the school and the students in my program. There is always room for growth, and I would love to be a part of the solution and not the problem.
Well, here comes week 5. I take my first test on Tuesday. I don’t know why I am so nervous, but I’ve been studying so I am about as ready as I am going to be!
As of this writing this instalment of my nail student blog may be the last one for a while. Similar to many schools and other institutions around the world, due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic classes at San Diego City College have been suspended until further notice.
During week five, we received another lecture on skin structure, growth, and nutrition and tests on pedicures and nail tips and wraps. A good portion of the week was focused on giving manicures.
NAILS has a new student blogger! San Diego-based Gregory Fletcher is looking forward to getting into the nail industry after retiring from his first career in the financial services industry
Let’s continue to shine, continue to spread light, joy and love to all around us! We’ll make a difference one smile, one hug, one nail service at a time!
It’s been such a long journey, from being excited and feeling unstoppable to being tired and exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore. Now, every day that passes and I get closer to my graduation date I get more and more energy.
