It’s been exciting during this week getting into acrylic, pink and white, and silk wraps. I just want to practice, practice, and practice some more. My instructor is so patient with me and so helpful at the same time. She encourages me and I’m so thankful that she is who she is during this time in my life. I even explored my creative side a bit with my new dotting tool. The results weren’t fabulous but I had fun. I have to get the foundation first before I start perfecting the art of it, but it didn’t stop me from trying!

This week I received a package of products from NAILS Magazine to help me continue my education and practice; it felt like Christmas! I sat in the middle of the floor, unwrapped everything, and just admired it. There were products from CND, Tammy Taylor, IBD, OPI, Cuccio, Kiara Sky, Duri, Orly, China Glaze, and Jessica, to name a few. I am so thankful for this journey I decided to embark upon, and support like this is wonderful confirmation. I really want to become a household name in this business, and building relationships is key. I just want to do everyone proud! I am sure some weeks down the line there will be several photos of me practicing with the items. I’ve already used a few of the polishes.
Let’s talk business for a minute. In the beginning I said I wanted to brand myself and own a salon one day. I have to pace myself in such a way that I’m aggressive with my goals and invest in myself to stay the course. In the background of my nail education, I’m working on the blueprint for my business. So on top of everything else, I burn the midnight oil strategizing, building my business plan, and branding. I’m super excited though, so I won’t complain at all. It’s all about the big picture!
I took an opportunity to reflect this weekend and really understand what becoming a student means for me right now in my life. I have had to turn down invites, miss time with my daughter, lose sleep, and learn a new level of patience. Despite everything I have sacrificed this far, I still feel like it’s worth every minute. No, it hasn’t been perfect. Yes, this experience has tried my nerves a time or two. But I wouldn’t trade any of it because it’s all preparing me for something greater. Look out world — Week 8 is coming up!
As of this writing this instalment of my nail student blog may be the last one for a while. Similar to many schools and other institutions around the world, due to the threat of the coronavirus pandemic classes at San Diego City College have been suspended until further notice.
During week five, we received another lecture on skin structure, growth, and nutrition and tests on pedicures and nail tips and wraps. A good portion of the week was focused on giving manicures.
NAILS has a new student blogger! San Diego-based Gregory Fletcher is looking forward to getting into the nail industry after retiring from his first career in the financial services industry
Let’s continue to shine, continue to spread light, joy and love to all around us! We’ll make a difference one smile, one hug, one nail service at a time!
It’s been such a long journey, from being excited and feeling unstoppable to being tired and exhausted and feeling like I couldn’t do it anymore. Now, every day that passes and I get closer to my graduation date I get more and more energy.
