How can I keep my manicure implements from dulling?

December 20, 2010

First, make sure that you are not keeping them working-side down in your container of disinfectant. This will blunt the ends of tools such as nippers or cuticle pushers with time and repetition. Note that proper disinfection practices deem it necessary to totally submerge your implements in the liquid you use. Also, make sure that you are following the disinfectant’s or autoclave’s instructions. If the directions say 10 minutes, then don’t leave them any longer as this can also lead to rusting and dullness. And finally, please ensure that these tools are used strictly for their true purposes and not as impromptu screwdrivers or to cut wire, plastic, or anything else non-manicure related. — Tanis Darling

Make sure you are using disinfecting solutions that are made specifically for your nail implements. Many techs choose to use alcohol to clean their instruments, but alcohol tends to break down the metals. Never drop the implements in your disinfecting jar. It might be a good idea to put cotton on the bottom of the jar to provide a cushion for the sharper instruments like your cuticle nippers. Never use one sharp implement to clean another. Use a cleansed soft toothbrush to clean any debris off your instruments. Wash with soapy water and fully submerse in a hospital-grade disinfectant. Never store the implements where they will be banging against each other. A soft, chamois-type holder for implements is best to store them individually. — Lynnette Diaz-Madden

When I glue on tips there are always air bubbles that show. In addition, it takes forever for the glue to dry.
