How can I stop lifting around the cuticle area?

June 18, 2007

First, make sure the product doesn’t come into contact with the skin. When this happens there is a pocket between the nail plate and the product that can cause lifting. Consistency is another cause. I always suggest taking a manufacturer’s class to learn the proper technique for that particular line. The last would be finishing around the cuticle to achieve a better seal. — MaeLing Parrish is co-owner of Nail Sensation in Columbus, Ohio.

Lifting of enhancements can usually be traced back to the nail tech’s procedure. Here are a few pieces of advice to help you avoid lifting. Make sure you follow proper prep before any application of coatings to the natural nail. Sometimes clients with oily (high-moisture content) nail plates can experience problems. Also, ensure you’re not applying your product at the wrong mix ratio, which can cause lifting. Read your acrylic system’s instructions before using, and try out different systems until you find the one that works best for you. — Jessica Marie Ellison is nail program instructor at the Yorkville School of Make-Up & Esthetics in Toronto.
